Morgane's presentation of Ai Yazawa and « Nana »

I am going to talk about Ai Yazawa a world famous manga Japanese author and especially of her Manga « Nana »

Ai Yazawa was born the 7 March 1967 at Hyogo District in Japan. She invented her pen name with the name of her favorite Japanese singer  Eikishi Yazawa, and   her real first name « Ai » what means love.

Ai Yazawa published her first Manga in 1985, in the magazines “Ribon”, which cold  « fifteen years », she was eighteen years old. Butshe became famous in Japan with « I’m not an angel ».  In 1999 she published « Nana », in the magazine “Cookie”, then she became famous in France then world whole.

Ai Yazawa really loves fashion too. She studied at the fashion designer’s school of Osaka. But  she preferred drawing so she stopped her studies. We can see her hobbies, fashion and music, in her Mangas. Indeed her characters wear her favorite bands (such as Vivienne Westwood in « Nana ») or with the bands that she invented (such as Happy Berry in “Neighborhood Story”), Moreover Nana, one of the main characters of the series, is a singer.

 Yazawa's most famous Mangas are " I'm Not an Angel " (1992–1995); " Neighborhood Story "(1995–1998) ; " Paradise Kiss " (2000–2004) ; and " Nana "( start in 2000).

Nana is her most successful Manga.

This is the story of Nana Osaki, a singer who sings with her band, Black Stones (Blast), composed of Ren (her boyfriend), yasu and Nobu. When Ren leaves for Tokyo to become a member of the famous band, Trapnest, however she decides to rest in their little village. She leaves for Tokyo at the age of twenty, to start her musical career with the Black Stones.

Nana Komatsu, the second Nana, is called Hachi or Hachiko by  Nana Osaki. She is very sentimental and she falls in love all the time, so she always need the help of her friends. When all her friends and her boyfriend left for Tokyo, she rests alone. But she decides to join them a year later, as she is having saved enough money, at the age of 20.

Nana meets Hachi in the train by chance, on their way to Tokyo. After a lot of  twist and turns, they come to live together in apartment 707. They have very different personalities and ideals, but they become best friend.

This is the beginning of their life in Tokyo.

Nana was made into two films, Nana (2005) and Nana 2 (2006) directed by Kentaro Otani, starring for Nana Osaki : Mika Nakashima and for Nana komatsu : Aoi Miyazaki(in Nana)

And Yui Ichikawa (in Nana 2). Yuna Ito ( Reira Serizawa the singer of Trapnest in the movie ) and Mika Nakashima created the songs for their two characters’ group in the movie.

It has been adapted into an animated series too, directed by Morio Asaka, with the songs of Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia.

Three video games of Nana were released one for Nintendo DS and two for Play station two.

I really enjoy this Manga because the drawings are very beautiful, and the story thrilling. I like the others Mangas by Ai yazawa too.

Twilight is a series of four vampire-based fantasy/romance novels by the American author Stephenie Meyer. It follows the adventures of Isabella Swan, a teenager who moves to Forks, Washington DC, and finds her life turned upside-down when she falls in love with Edward Cullen. She eventually learns that he is a member of a vampire family whose members drink animal blood rather than human. Then she meets three other vampires who want to kill her.
The Twilight series is popular among young adults and teenagers, having sold over 40 million copies worldwide with translations into 37 different languages around the globe. The four Twilight books were the biggest selling novels of 2008 on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list.
The four novels are Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

Film adaptation: Twilight has been adapted into a film. The film was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson play the parts of Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen. The movie was released in the United States on November 21, 2008 and grossed $35.7 million on its opening day.

Main characters:
- Isabella Swan (her nickname is Bella)– She’s one of the protagonists. In the first book, she’s 16. She’s a dark brown-haired and a brown-eyed girl. Bella is a perpetually clumsy "danger magnet". She moves from Phoenix, Arizona, to Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie. Many boys are attracted to her when she arrives, but she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious boy she discovers to be a vampire. In an attempt to protect Bella from his dangerous lifestyle, Edward leaves her. Bella falls into a depression and is comforted by her friend, Jacob Black. She comes to love Jacob, but not as deeply as she loves Edward.
- Edward Cullen – Edward was born on June 20, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, and is frozen in his 17-year-old body. He’s a vampire who lives with the vampire Cullen family, who drink animal blood rather than human. He falls in love with Bella soon after she arrives in Forks. Edward knows that he could kill Bella easily, a fact that torments him so much that in the second book he decides to leave Forks so he and his family won't be able to hurt her. He returns, however, because he realizes he cannot live without her.
- Jacob Black – A minor character in the first novel, Jacob is introduced as a member of the Indian Quileute tribe. He has a much larger role in the second novel, becoming a werewolf and Bella's best friend. Although he is in love with Bella, she initially sees him as just her best friend.

Correction : Watchmen : the Guardians.

Watchmen : the Guardians.

Watchmen's director is Zack snyder, the American director of 300. It was released in American theatres on March 6. Watchmen is inspired by a comic book :" Watchmen" invented by Alan Moore in 1986. This movie mixes action, drama and S-F and stars"Jackie Earle Harley, Patrick Wilson..." who are not very famous because Zack Snyder did not want a " Big star" in his movie. Watchmen is a very long movie, it lasts 241 minutes, because the comic book is long too ( 408 pages). In the USA, Watchmen was prohibited for under 17 years old whereas in France it was allowed for 12 years old and more!

Review :

_The Comedian has been murdered and his friends want revenge which is the main plot of this movie, but the audience discovers many other things... As a result, Watchmen is a difficult and amazing movie . It mixes complot, Cold war atmosphere, manipulation as well as History and fiction...

Good points:

_ The film is long but the spectators are not bored. There are lots of action, humour, but sorrow and love too.
_ It is not a simple movie of Superheroes, only one Watchman has great powers and this movie is not for children.
_ The graphic style is engrossing because Watchmen has been adapted from a comic book.

Weak points :

_ Many people do not like superheroes' movie.

I recommend this film because it's engrossing, attractive and it changes from the idea of "the good superhero ".

correction gran torino

The film was directed by Clint Eastwood, it was released on February 25 2009, starring Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang and Ahner Her. The film lasts 155 minutes. It is an American film, a drama and a thriller.

Walt Kowalski has just buried his wife. He is surprised when Thao, his young neighbour, tries to steal his collection car, a Gran Torino . A few days later, while members of a small gang headed by Thao's cousin tries to assault Thao, the retired Ford factory worker brings his gun out and scares the thugs. Many Asian families in the neighborhood come to thank him with gifts. The Korean War veteran and racist Walt rejects these oaths of friendship, but Sue, Thao's sister insists. She even ends up convincing him of accepting the young man's help to pay his debt to him. A friendship gradually grows between the two men.

In my opinion the story is great and moving because the story does not end badly for Walt Kowalski.

I recommend this movie to everyone because it is a film with a lot of humanity and the character played by Clint Eastwood is very endearing.

david's review corrected

Rasta Rocket is a comedy directed by Jon Turtleaub starring John Candy (the coatch) which lasts 98 minutes. It was released in 1993, on October the 1st.

The plot is inspired by a real story: four Jamaïcans composed the first Jamaïcan bobsleigh team and went to Calgary (Canada) to be a part of the 1988 winter Olympic Games.
I really liked this movie because there are a lot of funny sequences and the acting is amazing. Denice, Junior and Sanka (3 characters of the bobsleigh team) are exhilirating.

On the other hand, the film is moving because it shows the kind of racism black people are victims of (the German team does not like Jamaïcans and always criticises them). At the end of the film, I was breathless.
For me, this movie does not have weak points at all.

I recommend to people who do not know Rasta Rocket to see it because it is both vivid and funny.

corection of Marla Olmstead questions by Floriane

4. Why did they shoot this trailer?
They shot this trailer because they wanted to show Marla painting , and it makes us more eager to watch or to buy her paintings because being very young she has more merit. Journalists believed that Marla did not paint those works while we are now sure she is the one who painted them.

5/ The Art critics questioned the reality of Marla's talent ... a bit short!

SICKO is a documentary film directed by Michael Moore released in 2007 which lasts 2 hours.

In this movie, Michael Moore criticizes the health care system of the United States of America, comparing it to other countries as Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Cuba. It shows that the American health care system is unacceptable and a minority have access to it, that is to say rich people. Moreover sometimes there is racism to towards ethnic minorities. For example a black man dies because they didn't accept him in a hospital in part because of his colour of skin.
In the movie we can see Michael Moore interviewing and filming the people who helped after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and others who have difficulties living in good conditions because of the health care system problems. In the other countries he goes to, he interviews people about the health care system of the country where they live, such as Americans living in Paris. He ends his travel in Cuba where he invited all the people with health problems to seek treatments in Cuban hospitals. We can also see an interview of Che Guevara's daughter.

I particulary enjoyed this movie because Moore has a lot of humour and it is very interesting because it deals with a part of American Politics. He has a lot of courage too because he provockes the authorities , for instance in Guantanamo where the prisoners receive a better health care , and George W. Bush's administration. I appreciated the fact that he helps all these Americans experiencing difficulties .

I recommend this film to the people who are interested in political issue worldwide and those who fight against injustice in the world. It obliges us think about people's living conditions all around the world.

Nos Jours Heureux is a comedy directed by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache released in 2006 starring Jean Paul Rouve , Marilou Berry , Omar Sy , Jean Benguigui . It lasts .....
The story takes place in the countryside . The story is funny because the children are about ten years old and they are very young and they make loads of stupid things such as smoking . The children are away at a 3-week summer camp with a lot of supervisors , who cannot always check on them or stop them from doing mischief .
I like this film because it is very funny and instructive . This movie reflects the reality of young kids' life nowadays .
However I did not love this film too much because it gives wrong ideas to children .
I think this film is amusing although the children smoke during the movie .

Moving pictures

Cinema was invented in 1895 by the Lumière Brothers, in Lyon.

The first moving pictures were invented by the Lumière Brothers too, its name is "cinématographe".
"L'entrée dans l'usine" is the first movie by the Lumière Brothers and the first movie ever, its was created in 1895. "The jazz singer" is the first speaking movie, he was produced in 1927.

The most expensive movie was "Titanic" : its budget was 200 millions dollars but it made a profit of one billion dollars !
In France, the most popular movie is "Bienvenue chez les ch'tis", it was produced last year and more than 20 million French people went to see it.

In december 2008, "The spirit", Frank Miller's second movie after "Sin city", was produced in France. Maybe future movies will look like Franck Miller's movie because its graphic style is totally different.

Hello let me introduce my subject: Teakwondo was created on April 11th in 1955 in Korea, thanks to General "Choi Hong Hi" .Then, with the passing of the years,it developed worldwide. Later it became an Olympic sport.

The four disciplines:

*Free fight/ combat: It includes two people. The goal is to hit and be powerful. To manage seven fulls. In free fight, there are three rounds.

*And ranking:(In French passage de grade)It is a test of knowledge, to increase one's rank. And to reach black belt.

*Then breaking
(in French: de la casse) It is an event or a test of power.Breaking can be practised with objects in wood, brick, polystyrene and plastic.....

*Technical demonstration and challenge demonstration:

Taekwondo is especially famous for its spectacular foot technic.
In Korean, tae (Hangul: 태, hanja: ) means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon (Hangul: 권, hanja: ) means "to strike or break with fist"; and do (Hangul: 도, hanja: ) means "way" or "method"; so "taekwondo" is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist" or "the way of kicking and punching".

There are sixteen belts. Protections are compulsory during a fight/ combat: teeth protection; fight helmet;a shirt front;forearms protections; shins protections; gloves and the debok.

In Taekwondo ,the world's champion is Pascal Gentil. He is very strong and powerful. As well as very tall. He is 1m98 tall.Pascal Gentil won 23 medals in a row. Example: In the French championships he won thirteen gold medals which is extraordinary

The second world's champion is Michael Borot another French man .He is 1m85 tall. He won 14 medals. So Pascal Gentil is stronger than Michael Borot.

Her Majesty’s Royal iPod... by teacher

April 1, 2009, 2:55 pm

Pool photo by John Stillwell President and Mrs. Obama with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh during an audience at Buckingham Palace.
LONDON—
Finally! An answer to the question that everyone has been dying to know, especially after the debacle of the gift exchange ( échange de présents) last month when the Obamas gave British Prime Minister Gordon Brown a bunch of DVDs (une pile de DVDs) and proceeded to get hammered (martelé par la presse) for bad gift-giving by the British press: What did the Obamas give to Queen Elizabeth II Wednesday when they arrived at Buckingham Palace?

An iPod.

Seriously. An Obama aide reports that Mr. Obama gave the queen an iPod loaded (chargé de) with video and photos of her 2007 trip to the United States, as well as other songs and accessories, and a rare songbook signed by Richard Rodgers, of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame.
According to reports, the queen gave the Obamas a silver framed ( cadre en argent) signed photograph — a gift she gives to all visiting dignitaries.
No word yet on whether the songbook included the Rodgers and Hammerstein “Sound of Music” favorite, “My Favorite Things,” or whether the book will become one of the Queen’s favorite things. But one thing is certain. That iPod better have some good songs on there, because if past is prologue (si le passé sert d'indicateur) , the British papers will be examining this gift for a while.

Marla Olmstead's questions by Jessica

Why did they shoot this trailer?
They shot this trailer of the film "My kid could paint that" to determine if Marla's paintings are really art and whether she was talented or just manipulated. However we can see Marla while she is painting, her family, art crtics and newspapers.

What did the art critics question?
The art critics question Marla's gift. Some thought she was obliged by her parents to paint and others thought her works were not really art.

PRESenTATION by Paula

THANKSGIVING

At the end of november, many people start preparing Christmas.
But before, everyone celebrates Thanksgiving in the U.S.A.

This holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, the day when the Mayflower ( a ship) people who were in danger of starving, were saved by "Native Americans" (Indians).

'In the United States, Thanksgiving takes place on the fourth Thursday in November. On that date in 1621, the European settlers ( colons) in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gave their thanks to God for letting them survive their first year in the New World. They celebrated by having a large feast or dinner. The Indians who had helped them were invited to that feast. Nowadays, Thanksgiving is a family holiday. On that occasion, members of the same family who live far away get together for a big dinner. This traditional dinner reproduces the food the Plymouth colonists served in 1621: turkey (dindes), sweet potatoes or yams, squash ( courge), corn( maïs), cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. The period from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Day is often called the holiday season' ( wikipedia)

One year later, the governor of the colony decided to invite the local Indians to a dinner to thank them for their help.

President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official national holiday in 1863.
During this holiday, Americans eat turkey, sweet potateos (with cranberry sauce), pumpkin (and) pies, and pop corn.

I liked slumdog millionaire because I find this movie is amusing and moving . During the film we can see the poverty of the population of Dharavi . It was thrilling . I think Jamal's life is sad because his mother died when he was very young . Jamal and his brother Salim had to manage alone.

Shakespeare in Love

Directed byJohn Madden

Running time123 min.

Shakespeare in Love is a 1998 romantic comedy/drama film. The film was directed by John Madden and written by Marc Norman and playwright Tom Stoppard. Stoppard's first major success was with the Shakespeare-influenced play Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. The film is largely fictional, although several of the characters are based on real people. In addition, many of the characters, lines, and plot devices are references to Shakespeare's plays. Shakespeare in Love won a number of Academy Awards in 1999, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Gwyneth Paltrow) and Best Supporting Actress (for Judi Dench). It was the first comedy to win the Best Picture award since Annie Hall (1977).

synopsis:

The film centres around the forbidden love of William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) and Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), the daughter of a wealthy (= rich)merchant. As the film begins, theatre manager Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush) finds himself in debt to loan shark ( un prêteur à gage)Hugh Fennyman (Tom Wilkinson). Henslowe offers Fennyman a partnership in the upcoming production of Shakespeare's newest comedy, Romeo and Ethel, The Pirate's Daughter promising that it will be a hit. This play will later be renamed Romeo and Juliet and be reworked into a tragedy (but with some comical undertones with a few characters, like the Nurse). Will Shakespeare is suffering from writer's block ( le syndrome de la page blanche) and has not completed the play, but begins auditions for Romeo. A boy named Thomas Kent is cast in the role after impressing Shakespeare with his performance and his love of Shakespeare's previous work. Unknown to Shakespeare and the rest of the theatre company, Kent is young Viola de Lesseps, whose dream is to act, but as women are barred from ( ne sont pas autorisées à jouer sur scène) the stage, she must disguise herself as a young man in order to fulfil her dream. After Shakespeare discovers his star's true identity, he and Viola begin a passionate secret affair. There are strong parallels between the pair's romance and the romance in Romeo and Juliet, including the ballroom scene from Act 2 and the balcony scene immediately following it. The element of forbidden love forms the basis of Shakespeare's inspiration, and many of their conversations later show up as some of the most famous quotes in the play.Inspired by Viola, Shakespeare begins writing feverishly ( avec fièvre). His work in progress also benefits from the off-hand advice of playwright and friendly rival Christopher Marlowe (Rupert Everett). Yet Shakespeare and de Lesseps know that their romance is doomed ( vouée à l'échec). Shakespeare is married, albeit long separated from his wife, and Viola’s parents would never permit her to marry a commoner ( qn qui n'est pas noble)such as Shakespeare. In fact, Viola's father has privately arranged a betrothal ( fiancailles) for her to Lord Wessex (Colin Firth).Viola is called to the court of Queen Elizabeth I (Judi Dench), and Shakespeare dons a woman's disguise to accompany her. At court, Shakespeare manages to ( arrive à) goad ( pousser à)Wessex into betting fifty pounds that a play cannot capture the nature of true love. If Romeo and Juliet is a success, Shakespeare as playwright will win the money. The Queen, who enjoys Shakespeare's plays, agrees to be a witness (témoin) to the wager (pari). The true purpose of the meeting is revealed when Wessex announces his intent to marry Viola. The Master of the Revels,( le maitre des cérémonies) the Queen's official in charge of the theatres, learns that there is a woman in the theatre company at the Rose playhouse. He orders the theatre closed for this violation of morality and the law. Left without a stage or lead actor, it seems that Romeo and Juliet must close before it even opens. Shakespeare is offered one last chance by the owner of a competing theatre, the Curtain, who offers his theatre to Shakespeare. Shakespeare will take the role of Romeo himself, with a boy actor playing Juliet.Viola learns that the play will be performed on the day of her wedding ( mariage). After the ceremony, Viola's loyal nurse (Imelda Staunton) helps her slip away to the theatre. In a final twist ( retournement), shortly before the play begins, the boy playing Juliet starts experiencing the voice change of puberty. Viola takes the stage to replace him and plays Juliet to Shakespeare's Romeo. Their passionate portrayal of two lovers inspires the entire audience.Mr. Tilney, the Master of the Revels, arrives at the theatre with Wessex, who has deduced his new bride's whereabouts. Tilney invokes the name of the Queen to arrest all there for indecency. Suddenly, Elizabeth I's voice rings out from the back of the theatre: "Have a care with my name Mr. Tilney - you will wear it out!" The Queen had decided to attend the play in disguise, and says that she will handle ( s'occuper de) this matter herself. Although she recognizes Viola in her guise as Thomas Kent, the Queen does not unmask Viola, instead declaring that the role of Juliet is being performed by the boy Thomas Kent. However, even a Queen is powerless to break a lawful marriage. Queen Elizabeth orders "Thomas Kent" to fetch Viola so that she may sail to America. She also states that Romeo and Juliet has accurately portrayed true love and so Wessex is forced to pay Shakespeare the fifty pounds, the exact amount Shakespeare requires to buy a share in the Chamberlain's Men ( companie de théâtre). The Queen then directs "Kent" to tell Shakespeare to write something "a little more cheerful next time, for Twelfth Night"( Christmas time).Viola and Shakespeare part ( se séparent), never to meet again: she must accompany Wessex to a colonial settlement (colonie) in Virginia. Shakespeare immortalizes her by making the main character of his new play, Twelfth Night, Or What You Will, a strong young woman named Viola who disguises herself as a boy. The final image of the film has Viola walking away down a beach, with a voiceover ( voix off) by Shakespeare discussing his plans to write Twelfth Night and musing of its main character, "For she will be my heroine for all time, and her name will be... Viola."

Historical accuracy:

The film makes no pretence at historical accuracy. For example, the basis of Romeo and Juliet was a poem and not one of Shakespeare's romances. The film features many comic anachronisms: a psychotherapist; a mug ( un grande tasse) marked "A present from Stratford-on-Avon"; Shakespeare leaping into a ferry and saying "Follow that boat!"; Queen Elizabeth I remarking "Have a care with my name or you will wear it out"; and Shakespeare anticipating the phrase "The show must go on!"

The characters of Ralph Bashford, James Hemmings, Edward Pope, Sam Gosse, James Armitage, Viola de Lesseps, Robert de Lesseps (Nicholas Le Prevost), Lady de Lesseps (Jill Baker), Hugh Fennyman, and Lord Wessex did not exist.

The characters of Philip Henslowe, Richard Burbage, Ned Alleyn, Will Kempe, Edmund Tilney, Augustine Philips, John Hemmings (spelled in real life as "John Heminges"), George Bryan, Christopher Marlowe, and John Webster did exist, but their actions in the film are fictitious.

There were neither tobacco plantations nor English colonies in America in the 1590s

Marla Olmstead's questions

4. They shot this trailer to a movie called "My kid could do it" released in 2007 about Marla's talent. In this trailer we can see footage of marla painting, interviews of her family, relatives, and art critics about the precocious little girl. We can also see articles of some newspapers which question the authenticity of Marla's paintings and gift .

5. The art critics question the fact that Marla paints all these paintings at her age. Some think that it is another person who may paint them, others think her parents force her to do this and others think she has got no talent.

Bastien's review on "Die hard 4"

Live Free or Die Hard, ("Die hard 4" or "retour en enfer" in French), is a 2007 action film, and it's the fourth film in the Die Hard series. The film was directed by Len Wiseman and the screenplay was written by Mark Bomback.
Starring : Bruce Willis as John McClane (the protagonist of the first three films), Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Maggie Q.
The film was based on the 1997 article "A Farewell to Arms" written for Wired magazine by John Carlin. The film's North American release date was June 27, 2007.(July 4, 2007 in France). The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

The story takes place in New York City where a gang of cyber terrorists is determined to bring down the entire infrastructure of the United States on Independence Day, sending the country into anarchy and chaos. McClane and Matt Farrell,a talented computer hacker and ex-NSA (National Security Agency) agent have to stop the cyber terrorists aimed by Gabriel.

To my mind it is an amazing and brilliant movie because there are many beautiful stunts and fascinating special effects. The film is funny too because McClane and Matt Farrell are completely opposed ! However, the weak point is that there is not enough female presence.

I recommend this film because it's really amazing to watch. It is full of actions and it's very attractive !

walkyrie's review

Walkyrie

Walkyrie is an action movie created in 2008 ,was released in 28/01/2009 and was directed by bryan Singer. The running time is 1 hour and 50 minutes

Starring:Tom cruise,Carice Van houten,Bill Nighy

Walkyrie is movie which speaks about World War II with rebels who try make Hitler fall to find peace worldwide. The scene takes place in Berlin in 1942 with Claus von Stauffenberg who tries to kill Hitler. We can see the explosion and we think what Hitler is dead but the bomb does not touch him.

The stong points: This movie pays tribute to German resistance . People know what some Germans did not agree with Hitler's dictatorship . Even if we know the end, it is an attractive movie which is funny too.

The weak points: It is not very realistic and the actor playing Hitler does not look like him.

I think people should go to see this movie because it speaks about our history and it is interesting to know that some Germans wanted Hitler to fall. People who took part in Operation Walkyrie were killed or arrested.
